Bangladesh has the capacity to emerge as an industrial leader like China in the sectors of apparel, medicine, etc; delegates at a council meeting were told by a senior official of Paris-based International Chamber of Commerce (ICC).
However to do so, Bangladesh needs to upgrade infrastructure and keep inflation under control to attain GDP growth rate of 7%, President of ICC (Bangladesh), Mahbubur Rahman said.
Mahbubur Rahman was addressing the 17th ICC Annual General Council, where it was decided to uphold free trade and free market economy and resist protectionism measures of developed countries.
Quoting a McKinsey & Company report, he said, “Garment exports will double by 2015 and nearly triple by 2022. This will create employment opportunities for an additional 3.5 million workers”.
However, this target can be achieved only by diversifying the countries to which the country exports like Latin America, Africa, etc, he informed.
