Bangladesh officials assure BKMEA of easing gas crisis

Officials of Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company Ltd. (TGTDCL), which supplies gas to industries in Bangladesh, have assured knitwear producers that the prevailing gas crisis in industrial area of Narayanganj would be eased soon.

TGTDCL Managing Director Abdul Aziz Khan gave this assurance during a meeting with representatives of Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA).

He informed that TGTDCL would be installing new gas lines and compressors in Narsinghdi next month, which would ease gas crisis in Narayanganj industrial area.

BKMEA representatives said the apparel industry, which is Bangladesh’s top foreign exchange earning sector, is already facing problems due to global financial slowdown and the ongoing gas crisis is badly affecting the performance of the sector.

The TGTDCL officials were apprised that the continuation of the ongoing situation of decreased gas supply for few more months may push several knitwear factories on the verge of closure.

Earlier, BKMEA had urged the Government to enhance gas supply to their industries so as to aid acceleration of industrial growth.
