Bangladesh: Opposing views emerge on Turkish safeguard duty

Turkey had imposed a 17 percent safeguard duty on imports of Bangladeshi textiles and clothing including on those from the least developed countries' (LDCs) against zero-duty earlier.

Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) had vehemently opposed the decision and had said that it will severely hit clothing exports amounting to US $650 million to Turkey achieved last year.

However, the Bangladeshi envoy to Turkey Zulfiqur Rahman quoting Turkish importers claims that the additional safeguard duty would not harm Bangladeshi apparel exports to Turkey in the long term, but may be affect in the short-run.
