The new wage board to be constituted by the Bangladesh Government for reviving minimum wages of workers employed in the readymade garment (RMG) manufacturing units would have six members.
Of the six members, four will be permanent members, while there will be one representative each from the workers’ lobby and the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA).
The four permanent members are already announced. They are Dr. Mohammed Kamaluddin, Professor of International Business Department of Dhaka University; Mr. AK Roy, retired judge of Bangladesh; Mr. Fazlul Haque Montu, Executive President of Jatiya Sramik League; and Mr. Kazi Saifuddin Ahmed, Labour Advisor of Bangladesh Employers Federation.
The new wage board will look into the increasing demands of the workers and labour rights groups for hiking the minimum wage for those working in the country’s garment manufacturing sector.
The Bangladesh Government decided on setting up the new wage board, following a call by a high-profile delegation of International Labour Organization to immediately act to improve the labour standards and work conditions at garment factories, earlier this month.
